Carolyn Wonderland
Whenever someone asks me if I see a lot of live music in Austin, I have to say "No.. I really should take more advantage of that scene.." Well last night luck led me to live music and one of the coolest singing chicas I've ever seen!
As I pulled in the driveway after the 3hr drive from Arlington, Steven showed up to sell his table. He moved recently and our carport has been temporarily converted into a furniture showroom. Couches anyone?
He was then heading to Saxon Pub to meet his roommate and her friends and since I didn't have any plans and gnome was off discussing buses, I went along. I didn't realize until we arrived that it was Carolyn Wonderland who we were about to see. I've been meaning to see her ever since hearing her on public radio, and hearing my last roommate swoon over her voice. Well, let's just say the show did not disappoint!
Dimpled and button-nosed Carolyn appears sheepish as she jokes around between songs, but sheepish couldn't be a worse word to describe her. Accompanied by a drummer, keyboardist, and guitar, the woman can belt out a wide array of original songs with a unique blues/country-ish style, AND play the trumpet, AND play many styles of guitar, AND... I just loved the way she got lost in the music.
I never buy CDs at shows, but I um bought both of hers last night. She's at the Saxon Pub on S.Lamar every Thursday night and I couldn't recommend it more...
